Liuhebafa

''Note: The art may be spelled in different ways, for example:
Liu He Ba Fa ,
Lok Hap Baat Faat ,
and abbreviated as: LHBF''

Liuhebafa 六合八法拳 , also called "Xinyi Liuhebafa", and often referred to as "Water Boxing" 水拳 due to its principles, is a form of Chinese martial arts. The legendary Taoist sage Chen Tuan is credited with its origin and development. He was associated with the Hua Shan Taoist Monastery on Mount Hua in Shaanxi Province.

History

The Liuhebafa form "Zhu Ji 築基" was taught in the late nineteen thirties in Shanghai and Nanjing by Wu Yi Hui . It is said he had learned the art from three teachers: Yan Guo Xing, Chen Guang Di, and Chen He Lu.

Many of Wu Yi Hui's students had martial arts backgrounds and unfortunately modified the form to merge it with their own knowledge. This is one of several explanations for its similarities with other martial arts such as Xingyiquan, Baguazhang ,Taijiquan and Yiquan.

The History for the LHBF exercise is as follows:
Mt.HuaShan is a famous locale with many martial exercise 'surrounding'
Mt.HuaShan Temple exchanged ideas and students with Mt. WuDang Temple.

Chen Po, XiYi, is bonefide as a taoist, I-Ching Scholar; there is no evidence of him creating LHBF.

Water-flowing-exercise does come down historically to teacher Wu YiHui, who also favored LuHong 8-link palm; this is the source of LHBF exercise. Wu was praised by YiQuan creator Wang XiangZhai; they exchanged students for cross training.

The verses of LHBF are terse and cryptic; not likely from Chen Po.
A second series of verses, the 5-word 'song' is absolutely not from the same source nor time.

Wu YiHui at the Nanjing Martial Academy met famous BaGua and XingYi
teachers; there was some absorption of these into curriculum and the addending of swimming dragon forms.

There are no unique qigong nor weapons exercise in LHBF; these appear along the lineage of Chen YikYan while in Hongkong.

The LHBF exercise most often seen is derived from the Nanjing-HongKong series of 66-forms; there is also older series of 96-forms from Shandong and 104-forms from Henan that are interconnected. There also exists adaptations for qigong applications [with a name change] and martial matrixes; zhuzi is a name used for the LHBF exercise series, but zhuzi-boxing is LHBF adjusted to Yiquan.

There is also another viewpoint to consider: Founder Wu Yi-hui studied from three 'teachers' of LHBF named variously, but only studied extensively from his last teacher; interspaced with this study, Wu also was taught a shaolin derived Lu Hong Ba Shih: Lu Hong's 8 fists. Wu's teaching is partially an amalgam of the LHBF+ LH8. Wu's student, Chen Yikyan who had health problems is much the source of addending qi-gongs etc for his own benefit. There is much splintering of resources and teachers needs...and composites with Yi Quan also.
